This month brings an excellent opportunity to enjoy the view. The lunar eclipse with the long title - Super Blue Blood Moon - is going to be visible in the early morning hours tomorrow, Wednesday January 31. Supermoons and lunar eclipses are different phenomena that do not always occur at the same time. Are all supermoons red ? Are all lunar eclipses supermoons? The more dust or clouds in Earth’s atmosphere during the eclipse, the redder the Moon will appear. The eclipsed Moon is dimly illuminated by red-orange light left over from all of the sunsets and sunrises occurring around the world at that time. ![]() Redder light travels a straighter path through the air we only see it scattered throughout the sky around sunrise and sunset, when sunlight has traveled through a thick slice of Earth’s atmosphere before reaching our eyes.ĭuring a lunar eclipse, some of this heavily filtered morning and evening light makes it all the way through Earth’s atmosphere and eventually reaches the lunar surface. Widely scattered blue light tints the sky when the Sun is overhead on clear days. In air, colors at the blue and violet end of the rainbow scatter more widely than colors like red and orange. Sunlight bends and scatters as it passes through Earth’s atmosphere. If you’ve ever looked up at a blue sky, or savored a fiery sunset, you have seen this phenomenon in action. These same properties cause each color of light to behave differently when passing through a substance like air. Why does the Moon turn red during a lunar eclipse?Ĭolors are one way for our brains to interpret variations in the physical properties of light. Observers in eastern Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands, including Hawaii, will see both the total and the partial eclipse. The partial eclipse, which takes place as the Moon moves into and out of Earth’s shadow, will be visible from the eastern United States and Canada just before the Moon sets in the morning, and from India, Nepal, western China, Mongolia, and eastern Russia just after the Moon rises in the evening. Along the Asian Pacific Rim, the total eclipse will be visible just after moonrise. The total lunar eclipse will be visible near moonset in the western continental United States and Canada, all of Mexico, most of Central America and Ecuador, western Peru, and southern Chile and Argentina. Contours mark the edge of the region where the eclipse will be visible at the times when the Moon enters or leaves the umbra (the part of the Earth's shadow where the Sun is completely hidden) and penumbra (the part where the Sun is only partially blocked). This map shows where the lunar eclipse is visible. Our atmosphere filters the light as it passes, softening the edge of our planet’s shadow and giving the Moon a deep, rosy glow. During this alignment, Earth blocks some of the Sun’s light from reaching the full moon. What is a lunar eclipse?Ī lunar eclipse takes place when the Sun and Moon occupy precise positions on opposite sides of Earth. When the Moon is at or near its closest point to Earth at the same time as it is full, it is called a “ supermoon.” During this event, because the full moon is a little bit closer to us than usual, it appears especially large and bright in the sky. Each month, the Moon passes through perigee (the point closest to Earth) and apogee (the point farthest from Earth). ![]() The Moon travels around our planet in an elliptical orbit, or an elongated circle. ![]() In other words, on May 26, 2021, the full moon will enter Earth’s shadow - and, when the Moon is not in our planet’s shade, it will appear even bigger and brighter than usual. Tribeca: There are moments when the characters in the film start to role-play (Emma Roberts in her bedroom Nat Wolff playing the song at the party). ![]() After I wrote each story in screenplay format, it was much easier for me to see how I could combine characters and intertwine them into one cohesive story. I wasn’t really daunted by all of the things that could have deterred me as I might have been if I was a little more aware of the process. I was really naïve about the whole process, but that turned out to be to my advantage. ![]() I wrote each story in a script format, and then we made a test film of one of the scripts. GC: It did seem daunting at first, but James really helped me step by step. Tribeca: As a first time screenwriter, did the screenwriting process seem daunting? What was the most difficult part of the process? I had to wonder how this 35-year-old man is able to empathize so well? They are just mostly action figures, you know? One of the features of James’s book that really struck me was how capable he was of conveying the young female perspective-so often he was dead on. I don’t think even male characters are complex. Blockbusters tend to have a set character format. I do feel like filmmakers are beginning to focus on making female characters more interesting and complex, especially in the indie film world. How important is it for female stories to be told? Why does it seem they are mostly being told by independent filmmakers at this time? Tribeca: One thing that really struck me about the book was James Franco’s ability to write from the female perspective. One of the features of James’s book that really struck me was how capable he was of conveying the young female perspective-so often he was dead on. Unlike a novel, I had to take bits and pieces from all of Palo Alto: Stories to make it fit for the screen. While those were the three main stories I took from, I did take elements from the other stories. I thought it would be a good way to frame the whole piece with a beginning and end. I also loved the dialogue in the "Jack-O" story. Plus, it was a bit of a longer story so there was more for me to work with. I loved the longing of the two characters they are people who can’t really express their feelings. GC: The “April” story really stood out to me. Tribeca: Obviously, you could have picked a number of characters and stories from James Franco’s book, but you chose to mainly incorporate “Jack-O’,” “Emily” and the three-part story “April” into your film. So that’s the project we decided to pursue together. Shortly after, I read the book and loved it. ![]() He mentioned Palo Alto Stories and that sounded like the most interesting project to me. When we met, he proposed a lot of different ideas about how we could collaborate in some form or another. Tribeca: I understand that James Franco sent you a copy of Palo Alto: Stories after being introduced to you at a party by your mother. We talk to Coppola about her screenwriting process, directing actors for the first time, and learning about filmmaking in the edit room. Easily one of the hottest commodities at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival, Coppola’s first film is remarkably self-assured, filled with striking imagery, a pitch-perfect soundtrack, and skillful performances from Emma Roberts, Nat Wolff, newcomer Jack Kilmer and even Franco himself. She makes her feature length directorial debut with Palo Alto, which she adapted from James Franco’s acclaimed book of short stories, Palo Alto: Stories. Through the testing done by the Victoria Arduino team the same coffee at a reduced speed experienced more body and less fine nuances in the cup, conversely with increased motor speed less body and greater nuanced flavor. With a reduction in speed all the way down to 600 RPM which can be increased to 1200 RPM it gives the user one additional variable to experiment with their coffees. Motor speed’s effect on cup quality and nuances within it have been thoroughly tested by Victoria Arduino’s team working on the Mythos line of coffee grinders.
